  • Like millions of other men, at age 35 or so, I began balding and I have to say, for the better part of a decade it really didn't bother me. For the first few years, I watched a “half-dollar” size spot in the back of my head slowly progress. I tried minoxidil - then switched to Propecia (which actually helped considerably for a while) but by age 45, the hair loss had REALLY started to spread - not only in the back but in the middle of my head and in front. For years, it was easy enough to wear a closely cropped hair style like many other balding men. Physically, I felt great, I exercised religiously but one day, as I was getting ready for work, what I saw in the mirror was someone that I actually didn't recognize. It totally startled me. For the better part of a year, I told myself to let go of the vanity and put my ego in check -- (friends would say “Just shave your head”) but it weighed on me.

One day after a round of golf and some casual beers with some friends at my golf club, somehow, someway the conversation of “hair transplantation” came up. Two of the guys I was with (both physicians coincidently) had actually had procedures done (one of the guys actually had 3 procedures (all 3 from Dr. Robin Unger). I admired how candid he was about what he had done and he openly said to me: “You should definitely go talk to her and get it done... you have a very young looking face but the way you are balding really changes your whole look” (He happened to be a Plastic Surgeon so I valued his opinion -- and actually felt the same way). I called Dr Unger, made an appointment for a consult and came away with a really terrific feeling. There was no selling -- there was no coercion, simply just a factual, friendly exchange and sharing photo’s of what could be expected. (I work in the healthcare profession so I have a tendency to get 2nd and 3rd opinions and consults and for some reason, there was NONE of that with Dr. Unger). The professional relationship, the confidence and comfort were honestly unprecedented. So, a few days later I had made the commitment to have the procedure done and was scheduled for surgery in January of 2011.

My first surgery was scheduled for January 28th -- while I was a little nervous going into the procedure, I look back on it and it was one of the best things I’ve ever decided to do. Dr. Unger, her staff and every interaction was spectacular. I happened to be very fortunate as my donor site produced a tremendous number of grafts. The transplant was predominantly made in the middle section and the difference was AMAZING. To give you an idea of the recovery process, 10 days from the day I had the surgery, I was enjoying a weekend with friends at the SuperBowl. If you follow Dr. Unger’s directions for post surgery recovery, you will be AMAZED at how quickly the healing process is and how little discomfort you experience. For me, this included all aspects, including an optional homeopathic regimen which I am convinced contributes greatly to the healing process. This is not to say that you don’t experience a few days of pain and discomfort (you totally do) but when I tell you it is a SMALL price to pay for getting you hair back (and not just hair covering bald spots, I mean a head of hair like you had 15-20 years ago!)

So, how did friends and colleagues react? Well, I decided to take a very candid approach to what I did. People (colleagues and Clients mentioned that something “looked different”). My response was, “Yes, it does, doesn’t it? I had a hair transplant, doesn’t it look awesome”. People had different reactions ranging from “good for you” to “I’ve always wanted to do that” but for me, there was nothing to hide and I was happy to share and encourage anyone who was considering it to go for it! To give you an indication of just how satisfied I was, I had my second procedure 4 days ago! This time, the transplant was made to the front of my head. I am actually somewhat surprised how well and how fast my recovery is coming along (actually better than the first procedure) and I believe that is because if you follow what Dr. Unger tells you to the “T”, the pain and discomfort you experience is minimal.

Dr Unger is truly a consummate professional and a medical artist on EVERY level. However, it is a team effort and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how great all of her staff, technicians and associates are. From the moment you walk through the door for your first consult, through every step of the day of surgery to your final follow up visit, it is white glove, concierge service at it’s finest. With regard to the end product, I could not feel better about my decision (I will probably elect to have a 3rd procedure done) and I enjoy and appreciate the look and feel of having a nice head of hair again.

  • I have been working in hair transplantation for the last 10 years. I also had the opportunity to work with many hair transplant surgeons during those years. I have come to appreciate the similarities and differences in techniques of the different doctors in the field, which eventually translates to results several months to 1 year after the procedure. The result speaks for itself. There are bad results(poor patients), acceptable results(OK), and excellent results(WOW!). Having a surgical background, and being a surgical assistant in hair transplant surgery, I can confidently say that Dr. Robin Unger has what it takes to become the best in the field. I personally admire how meticulous she is in taking the donor, doing the sites and checking the grafts right after they are planted by the assistants. She makes it sure that each and every graft is properly placed. Another admirable trait of her is that she is always eager to learn new things that will make her a much better surgeon. She also make sure that patient comfort is a priority, keeping them pain free throughout the day. These are the technicalities that patients usually do not see when they have their procedures done. Having watched her do an excellent job on all her patients, I put my trust in her to do the procedure on myself. Yup, I am also a patient, and a happy one.

  • I was referred to Dr. Unger by two patients both pleased with the hair transplant procedure they had undergone. Although hair loss had become an increasingly nagging issue for me, I remained a bit skeptical and nervous about any hair surgery. However when I saw Dr. Unger's work up-close, the doubts were quickly replaced with enthusiasm. I quickly made an appointment for a consultation. She was friendly, patient, and of course a true professional. She explained in full detail the surgery and the realistic expectations one can count on. I never felt rushed or pressured. The day of my surgery was sort of like a dream-- a really good one. The staff at Dr. Unger's practice were the obvious professionals one would expect, yet they also were understanding and outright supportive. They kept me pain free and comfortable throughout entire procedure. It's now been three months since my surgery. I am thoroughly pleased with the healing results! The transplanted hair is just starting to come in. It looks fantastic. Although I'm in the "dormant phase", I'm confident it will be well worth the wait. I've had a few follow up visits with Dr. Unger, where she takes some photos and carefully examines the donor and recipient area. So far so good. I wholeheartedly encourage any potential patient who might be considering this surgery to meet with Dr. Unger. She is exceptional.

  • Patients always ask me "If you had a choice of which doctor will do your hair transplant, who would you choose?" Clearly, I chose a great doctor and couldn't be happier. I've worked with Dr. Robin Unger fo years and have seen the kind of perfectionist you'd want to have for a doctor. I'm a nervous wreck by nature and I'm sure my husband couldn't agree more but Dr. Unger kept me relaxed the whole procedure, it was unreal! She made sure I was pain free and well taken cared of. As one of her staff, I had the advantage to see how she works behind close doors and I am thrilled she's my doctor.

  • While in New York, I had the opportunity to spend an observation day with Dr Unger. As I am working as a dermatologist in Switzerland, I was particularly interested to see Dr Unger’s method of hair restoration. I received a warm welcome from the whole team and it is clear when you enter the operating room that there is an atmosphere of professionalism and personal dedication to each patient. Dr Unger was most accommodating and took time to discuss cases and answer questions. It is impressive seeing her operating and it was really a pity I stayed there on my last day before returning home and I therefore wasn’t able to prolong my stay.

  • Due to concerns about my hair loss I had considered opting for a hair transplant procedure. It was because of this that I was referred to Dr. Unger. Beginning with a consultation, I was relieved to find that Dr. Unger was a kind, caring person who is extremely knowledgeable in her field. I went into the consultation nervous about what to expect and full of questions about the procedure. She patiently discussed the procedure with me and answered whatever questions I had. She also advised me of other options to remedy my hair loss in case I felt that I did not want to go through with surgery. This goes to show Dr. Unger's good nature and concern for her patient's satisfaction. After weighing my options I decided to go through with the surgery and I couldn't be happier. The procedure was smooth and I felt no form of discomfort as I was allowed to bring music for myself to listen to, was given lunch, and was in the great the company of Dr. Unger and her staff throughout the procedure. It has been a week since my procedure and I am completely confident in my decision to have my hair transplant done by her. I have had a great experience with Dr. Unger and would strongly recommend her talent and ability to anyone who is considering this procedure.

  • I saw Dr. Unger in consultation, after a strong referral from my hairstylist who has seen many of her patients. She was a breath of fresh air !! She took alot of time going over the details of the surgery and my case in specific, she was personable and caring and answered all my questions (and even some that I didn't know I should ask). I am definitely going to book a surgery with her. I only wish she had been easier to find - I saw three other doctors I had found on-line and thank god I didn't go ahead with any of them.
